Waffle House Boycotts Belgian Waffles To Support Team USA

Waffle House Belgium BoycotThe U.S. men’s national soccer team faces off with Belgium in the World Cup Tuesday, and things are already getting pretty heated between the two countries. In honor of Team USA, restaurant chain Waffle House is boycotting Belgian waffles until the match. It’s not a particularly hard thing for the restaurant to do, considering its menu doesn’t feature any Belgian waffles; the popular eatery serves up its own specialty, sweet-cream waffles. But it’s the thought that counts, guys.

“We support a boycott on Belgian Waffles,” a Waffle House spokesperson told TMZ, which first broke the news of the boycott. “We

support America. We don’t support Belgian Waffles.”

USA vs Belgium USA vs Belgium

Another Waffle House representative added to Entertainment Weekly that this move is only natural because Waffle House is “America’s place to eat, so of course we’re supporting Team USA.”

After TMZ reported about the boycott, Waffle House began rallying support for Team USA on its Twitter. Soon enough, the hashtag #NotABelgianWaffle began popping up on Twitter feeds. Even Matthew Barzun, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, jumped in with a message to Belgium.

There’s no word yet if the boycott will end if Belgium beats the United States. Will it continue if the Belgium vs. USA match goes terribly wrong, or if Belgium pulls out a 2014 World Cup win? Only time will tell.

But until then, make sure you avoid all Belgian waffles for the rest of the day, lest you want Waffle House calling you a traitor.
