If you plan to try at milkshake at the new Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant opening soon in St. Matthews, get ready for this question: "Would you like bacon with that?"
In support of the concept that everything is better with bacon, the restaurant will offer the option of adding bacon to its "build-your-own" milkshakes.
Five Guys operators refer to it as "Five Guys in a cup," Jason Tyner, president of BGE Operating Partners-KY, said Tuesday.
A year in the making, the restaurant is expected to open Feb. 3 in the former Hwang's Martial Arts building, 4226 Shelbyville Road, just east of Hubbards Lane.
he St. Matthews restaurant will be only the 40th of the more than 1,200 Five Guys sites nationwide to offer shakes, Tyner said. The flavor lineup will include coffee, malted milk, salted caramel, Oréo Creme — plus bacon and other toppings, if desired.
The plans required various government approvals and a lot of loyal fans "have been waiting a long time for us to open," said Tyner, who oversees Five Guys' Greater Kentucky & Southern Indiana Territory from an office in New Albany.
The St. Matthews restaurant has hired about 50 people, and an outdoor dining patio seating 40 to 50 will be out front, Tyner said.
The Five Guys chain attracted national media attention when President Barack Obama made a stop at one in Washington, D. C. in 2009.
It would be the third Five Guys in the area, joining those at 4116 Summit Plaza Drive in northeast Louisville and 2221 State St. in New Albany. Another Louisville Five Guys is expected to open in early summer at the outdoor Jefferson Commons development next to Jefferson Mall on the Outer Loop.
The restaurants also serve hamburgers; kosher-style hot dogs; Cajun-style fries; and veggie, grilled cheese and BLT sandwiches, among other fare. Other toppings include grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, green peppers and hot sauce.
